Mbunzi (ironmongery), kupaza (Grinding), kusowa (Pounding), kutema (Wood carving), Kusuka (Mat Marking. Bao games, Swahili embroidery, dhow building, and henna painting.

 

TRADITIONAL COMPETITIONS

Donkey Race- young boys aged between 10 and 18 years ride these beasts of burden, striving to be the first to reach the finishing line along the seafront.
These race donkeys are prized stallions belonging to the older members of the community.

Dhow Races- The elegant dhow races are true display of the age-old skills of the local sailors. Lateen sails grace the waters of lamu harbour on Friday and Saturday afternoon for the Jahazi (large Dhows) and the Mashua (smaller Dhows)

SWAHILI BRIDAL CEREMONY

The Swahili bridal ceremony known as kupamba is a display of the bride. It is a party involving female friends and women kin of the bride.
The beautifully dressed bride is showered with the gifts and the women celebrate the occasion dancing the night away to taarab music.

GUIDED VISIT TO TAKWA RUINS.

Lamu museums will offer guided visits to Takwa Ruins on Manda Island on Sunday morning. Takwa are the remains of a thriving 15th and 16th century Swahili trading town before it was abandoned on the 17th century. The unique Friday Mosque with large pillar a top qibla wall is among the most notable features. These ruins gazetted as a National Monument in 1982.

EXHIBITIONS

The Swahili carved Doors: shared influence along the Indian ocean, - Swahili curved doors constitute a unique cultural heritage common on the east African Coast.
